Bedroom Makeover

One of my very most favorite blogs to stalk is Vintage Revivals.  Mandi has a fun style and is hilarious!  She also hosts an awesome contest on her blog “The Epic Room Makeover”!

We have lived in our home for 5 1/2 years.  In that time, I have been able to work on most of the rooms to make them what I want.  There is one room that has been very neglected though, and that is the master bedroom.

Before we moved into our house, the previous owners turned the master bedroom into an apartment.  While that means that there is lots of room and tons of potential, the room right now is pretty quirky.  One of the hardest parts for me to work around is the “kitchen”.  It is hard to be very inspired when I have this in half of my room.  It makes me feel like I am living in a studio apartment or a dorm room.

155

The bedroom-kitchen sink!  I guess it could be handy if you had an urge in the middle of the night to wash some dishes.  I have not had that urge.

158

Complete with lighthouse tiles.  I can’t wait to smash these!  They are so hideous!!

168

There was also a half stove when we moved in that I demanded be trashed immediately.  The stove plug is still on the wall, and it’s nice and black so it blends in….or not.

This hole-in-the-wall was where they put the fridge.  When we first moved in and had no closet, we used this space creatively to hang our clothes.  Luckily, a couple of years ago we were able to build a closet in the “living room” part of our bedroom, but that still left us with this odd hole.  We stuck this entertainment unit there for now-mainly to cover it up.

Back to the other side of the room.  We have no headboard.  I really want to make an awesome one with a door, but just haven’t found the perfect one yet.  I have a cool iron rod thing I bought several years ago, but I want it to be something colorful, and don’t want to paint it without the rest of the room looking good.  Our bedding is also kind of sad.  Half of the shams are really old and tattered, and the bedspread got ripped the first time I tried to wash it.  No use in replacing them until I do something amazing with the rest of the room.

175

My husband uses a CPAP machine which makes for a very ugly decoration on the side table.  The side tables were from my grandmothers home.

157

We have been married for almost 11 years, and still don’t have our “own” furniture.  Our dressers were mine as a little girl.  I want to be able to pass them on to one of my own little girls.  I really want to find an awesome piece of furniture to refinish for our room, but haven’t found anything yet.  I have nothing really stylish setting on anything.  I pretty much just put a bunch of pictures around and called it good.

177

A few more of the quirky things we deal with.  Since we have both a “bedroom” and a “kitchen” we have both carpet and tile in our room.

162

When it was an apartment, the entrance was from a door in the back, so our light switch coming from the hall is covered up.

169

To turn on the light, we have to walk clear across the room to a different light switch.

179

This is the one attempt I have made at decorating with something fun.  I love my old rake necklace holder, but it does look pretty lame on the wall all by itself.

163

We have three light outlets on our ceiling, but only one of them actually has a light.  It is off-centered to be over the “bedroom” so the other side of the room gets quite dark.

Our blinds were broken when we moved in.  I love light, and hate that I can’t open them each day.  I also have made no attempt at curtains.  Kind of useless when the rest of the room is so sad.

One last look at my sad master bedroom:

I really want this room to be a room that I love.

Your room could definitely use some decorating love. Good luck with the contest--I would love to see your space madeover! (Even if you are not selected though, it sounds as though you already have some great ideas for your room. Sometimes getting started is the most difficult part.) Good luck!
