I heard on several blogs as well as the news that it was free admission in May to Kennecott Copper Mine. So, over Memorial Day weekend when the girls were out of school, I decided to go up. I got my mom to come along too, and it was quite the adventure!
First of all, the way we used to get up there, (through Copperton) is not the way anymore. So we asked a man taking out his garbage, and he gave us directions, which was quite the detour from where we were!
Next, once we got up to the entrance, the lady asked for the entrance fee. I told her that I had seen several places that it was free admission, and she said only if I printed out a coupon from their website. Um, ok. Well, I only had $2. She finally said she would look and see if they had any extra coupons, and they did. That would have turned into quite the annoying adventure if we went all that way and couldn’t get in!
Finally, we got up there, and braved the crazy winds to see everything.
Jared was scared to look down into the hole even if my mom or I held him. The girls all liked it though.
The visitor’s center was much more up Jared’s alley. He loved all of the truck displays and loved to run around pushing buttons on everything!
My cute older girls loved learning everything they could. They asked grandma lots and lots of questions. Lily loved all of the pretty rocks!
We watched part of a movie, but had to leave when Jared lost interest. The coolest part of our visit though, was getting to stand and watch as they blasted part of the mine!!! Waiting for it to happen took a while, but it was pretty cool when it did!! We also went in the gift shop for a bit, and when we left, the nice lady followed us out and asked my kids if they would each like a little Fool’s Gold rock to take home! They of course said yes and have loved their special “sparkle” rocks!
We had a great time on our adventure, even if our crazy detour made me run on fumes the whole way back to civilization! Oops! Next time check the gas, and think about how far you are going BEFORE you leave!

I haven't been up there since I was a kid! That is great you were able to take your kiddos for free...what an adventure!
Dearest Charisse! I am finally getting caught up on my blogs. I loved seeing all the things you've been up to. I've never heard of the Heritage Center in Taylorsville, and my Ancestor was John Bennion who settled the area, so we'll have to go check it out. We also had fun going to the copper mine. And it's really funny that you were totally low on gas because that happened to us too. And there is no gas stations in Copperton. Yes, always fill up before visiting the copper mine!
