Comcast does an annual community service day each year called “Comcast Cares”. This year, they chose Vista Elementary as one of the schools to do service at. Parents, students and community members were invited to come and help with the service. When I was first told about this day, I got really excited and didn’t think we were doing anything else that day. Savannah, Michaela and I signed up to participate.
Sometimes my brain goes into overload and shuts down. Then at a later date it reboots and I realize that there are conflicting events in my brain swimming around. This was the case with Comcast Cares Day. I was excited about the opportunity to teach my girls about service and that it can be fun and signed up. Later, I realized that it fell on the girls Dance Competition day. I had hoped that their competition would be a little later in the day so we could do both. It ended up being at 10, so we were only able to stay to Comcast Cares Day for a short time. We were still able to participate and do a few fun things.
We started in the gym with donuts and orange juice for breakfast. I don’t know if they thought that through. Michaela leaned over and told me that after you eat a donut, the juice tastes really sour! (he he!) The girls loved the donuts though!!
They told us some of the things we were going to be doing and then we separated to our various areas. There were people doing yard work (in the snow), painting walls, cleaning rooms, and then they had the younger kids go to the library for a literacy group. That was our group. We listened to a few stories, and then talked about what reading meant to each child. They took us to another room where the kids got to paint on their own board what reading meant to them. They are going to put all of the boards together and make a giant piece of art for the school! It will get to hang there for ever now! My girls LOVE art, and had a fun time painting.
This is Savannah’s final painting. She loves to dance, and loves to read about her favorite hobby!
Michaela has loved learning to read this year in school! Here is her painting.
When they were done with their paintings, it was time for us to go to their dance competition. We were all so sad to leave! I am glad my brain had a little shut down though, because it is important to me for my girls to learn that it is just as important to do service as it is to have a fun hobby and talent, like dance. It was also fun for us to have a little mommy/daughter time that morning! I am also excited to see all of the work that was done at the school by those many volunteers!!
{I did get to finally see their pictures at the school. They actually had them hung outside on the fence. I hope they can stand all the weathering, but they do look really cute. Here are their pictures again hung up:
They hung Michaela’s sideways, but it totally fits her personality, so I love it even more!!}
